According to German news agency Bild, flight number 59 of the leading US airline United Airlines took off from Frankfurt, Germany on Friday afternoon, March 29, and was scheduled to land in San Francisco but had to return to the departure airport a few hours after takeoff.

At least one of the plane's toilets was reportedly overflowing with waste.

Airplane toilets break down occasionally, but overflowing into the passenger cabin is rare.

While the crew tried to figure out if the problem on the Boeing 777 could be fixed, the plane circled over the North Sea before returning to Frankfurt airport.

"On Friday, March 29, United Airlines Flight 59 returned to Frankfurt following a maintenance issue with one of the aircraft's lavatories," a United Airlines spokesperson told US media.

Passengers were provided with hotel rooms for the night and rebooked on other flights the following day, the spokesman added.

United Airlines has had a series of troubling incidents in recent weeks, including on March 29 when several passengers on a flight from Israel to Newark, US, were hospitalized due to high winds and the plane was forced to divert to Stewart International Airport in New York.

In early March, a United Airlines flight to Japan from San Francisco had to divert to Los Angeles because the Boeing plane suffered a tire failure after takeoff.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby recently tried to reassure passengers that the airline is safe amid a slew of problems.

"Safety is our highest priority and is at the heart of everything we do. Unfortunately, over the past few weeks, our airline has experienced a number of incidents that serve as a reminder of the importance of safety," Kirby said in a letter to customers earlier this month.
