Video of goalkeeper Vireak Dara's mother bursting into tears when meeting her son
After the 2-1 victory of the Cambodian national team over Timor Leste at the Olympic Stadium on the evening of December 17, the image of goalkeeper Vireak Dara's mother hugging her son tightly and crying attracted the attention of fans.
The Kampuchea Thmey Daily reported that goalkeeper Virak Dara's mother was waiting for her son at the stadium gate. When Dara came out, she rushed to hug him and burst into tears.
“This shows the heart of a mother who loves, sympathizes and understands her son’s heart unconditionally. This action has touched everyone, especially Cambodian football fans, ” wrote the Kampuchea Thmey Daily.

“ Goalkeeper Vireak Dara was not named in Cambodia’s starting lineup for the match against Timor Leste. He had previously made two mistakes that led to Singapore scoring two goals in Cambodia’s 1-2 loss on December 11. These mistakes have caused Vireak Dara to receive much criticism from fans ,” wrote Kampuchea Thmey Daily .
21-year-old goalkeeper Vireak Dara has not only been criticized but also suspected of being involved in match-fixing. The Cambodian Football Federation has even recently opened an investigation.
On December 14, General Sao Sokha, President of the Cambodian Football Federation and Commander-in-Chief of the National Military Police, said that the FFC has coordinated with competent authorities to investigate and clarify all suspicions after the Cambodian team lost 1-2 to Singapore in the 2024 AFF Cup. Mr. Sao Sokha affirmed: "Honest officials and players do not need to worry about their integrity."
Cambodia coach Koji Gyotoku has chosen goalkeeper Reth Ly Heng to start in the win over Timor Leste. Cambodia will face Thailand on December 20 in the final group stage match of the 2024 AFF Cup.
