Free domain name, website, email for many people

Some young people, businesses, and business households will be given 2 years of free use of the domain name '.vn' and digital services (website, email).

The Ministry of Information and Communications has just issued a Decision approving the "Program to promote and support people, businesses, and business households to have a reliable and safe online presence with digital services using the national domain name '.vn' in provinces and cities across the country in the period of 2024-2025.

The online presence program with the national domain name '.vn' will be chaired by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC, Ministry of Information and Communications). The decision takes effect from May 21, 2024.

Accordingly, businesses established within 1 year of registering to use the domain name, business households with a business registration license will be exempted from using the domain name "biz.vn" and digital services (website, email) for 2 years.

In addition, all Vietnamese citizens aged 18-23 will be given 2 years of free use of the domain name “id.vn” and digital services (website, email, online CV/blog).

The program aims to raise awareness of online presence on the Internet environment, promote the digital economy and digital society. Through the program, people, businesses and individual business households will be supported with Internet usage skills to develop themselves, do business, establish a digital brand and have an online presence with the domain name “.vn”.

The program helps localities improve their digital economic index in the digital transformation index, develop a sustainable digital economy and digital society from the root. At the national level, the program contributes to expanding and strengthening Vietnam's sovereign presence in cyberspace.

At the same time, the program also contributes to increasing the usage rate of the national domain name “.vn” and Vietnam’s ranking in the Global Innovation Index (GII), developing domestic online content and services, and promoting Vietnamese data to be stored and managed in Vietnam.

The goal for the 2024-2025 period is to have at least 400,000 “id.vn” and “biz.vn” domain names and digital services (websites, emails) registered for use. The Ministry of Information and Communications aims to have at least 1 million “.vn” domain names registered for use by 2025, reaching the top 20-30 in the world.

In Vietnam, the number of national domain names ".vn" currently reaches about 610,000. The rate of businesses registering to use the domain name ".vn" accounts for about 25%.

According to the 2023 E-Commerce Index (EBI) report, the percentage of Vietnamese enterprises with websites is currently only 44% (including international domain names and ".vn" domain names).

Meanwhile, in 2022, this rate in India was 31.14% of small businesses, 53.19% of medium-sized businesses. In Korea, 68% of small businesses and 79.26% of medium-sized businesses had websites. In Indonesia, 30.67% of small businesses and 54.97% of medium-sized businesses had websites.
