Many years ago, Mr. Do Cong Dung had a stable job in Ho Chi Minh City. He opened an ice cream shop, but due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to return to his hometown to start a business. Mr. Dung is looking for a way to invest in raising herbal chickens, raising them in a barn and a 2,000m2 garden area in Duy Thu commune (Duy Xuyen).
In 2023, he will raise the first batches of chickens, each batch of about 200 chickens, raising them one after another, 4 batches a year. Herbal chickens produce delicious chicken meat, chicken gizzards, and clean chicken eggs that are popular in the market.
For 2 years, Mr. Dung has been raising chickens and gaining experience, evaluating the quality of chicken meat and eggs. He also founded Dai Son Cooperative, planning to invest in local farms after finding a large area of land suitable for the commune's livestock planning.
Mr. Dung regularly uses herbs such as lemongrass, ginger, ginseng, perilla, pennywort, moringa, mugwort... to aid digestion, fight viruses, and improve the quality of chicken feed.
“Previously, the overuse of antibiotics would weaken the chicken’s resistance and make the meat less delicious. Not to mention, chickens still get sick and die in large numbers even though antibiotics were used. Moreover, if there are antibiotic residues in chicken meat, it will affect the health of consumers,” Dung shared.
According to him, the disease prevention technique when chickens are 15-20 days old is to use herbal medicine mixed with water for the chickens to drink. Give the chickens one drink a day, use continuously during the raising process.
The barn needs to use biological bedding to ensure hygiene and biosecurity in animal husbandry. Each herbal chicken after 5-6 months reaches a weight of about 2-2.5 kg, selling price per kilo is 150 thousand VND.
Herbal chicken products are not only sold by Mr. Dung in flocks to the market but also proactively supplied fresh chicken meat packaged and vacuum-sealed when customers have a need to order. Chicken giblets are also packaged, vacuum-sealed, and refrigerated to send to Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang for customers.
Herbal chicken eggs are also collected, packed in blister packs, labeled, branded, and stamped with traceability stamps. Mr. Dung aims to register herbal chicken and egg products as OCOP products in the near future.
“If successful, when a suitable and large farming location is agreed upon, the cooperative will invest in a farming model in Dai Son commune, Dai Loc district. Not only focusing on developing whole herbal chicken products, the cooperative also focuses on developing packaged and vacuum-packed chicken products and clean chicken eggs,” Mr. Dung shared.
