Interfax news agency reported on August 31 that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and CEO of Russia's Gazprom energy group Alexei Miller met in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Speaking after a discussion lasting about 3 hours with Gazprom's CEO, Foreign Minister Szijjarto affirmed: "Hungary has no intention of giving up Russian gas supplies."

Meanwhile, Gazprom said it had discussed with Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto "progress and prospects for gas cooperation, especially Moscow's gas exports to Budapest".

The Hungarian government has repeatedly stated that it will continue to cooperate with Russia in the energy sector; affirming that it does not want to give up any source of supply that helps ensure energy security for the country.

It is also a major importer of Russian oil and gas. In 2023, Hungary will import 5.6 billion cubic meters of Russian gas via the TurkStream gas pipeline.

In October 2023, Budapest reached new agreements with Gazprom to increase imports during the winter.
