On October 7, Director of the Department of Bilateral Affairs of the Cuban Foreign Ministry Carlos Pereira said that the country officially requested to join the BRICS group of leading emerging economies as a partner country.

On social media, Mr. Pereira emphasized: "Cuba has officially requested to join BRICS as a 'partner country' in a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin - currently the rotating chairman of the group".
Russian Ambassador to Cuba Victor Coronelli also said earlier that Moscow expected to welcome the Cuban delegation to the BRICS Summit in Kazan.
BRICS has undergone two expansions since its inception in 2006. In 2011, South Africa joined the original members Brazil, Russia, India and China.
In August 2023, six more countries, including Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), were invited to join the group.
Argentina then opted out of joining in late December 2023, while the remaining countries, except Saudi Arabia, became full members of BRICS on January 1, 2024.
Russia will host the BRICS Summit in Kazan from October 22-24.
Recently, President Vladimir Putin also revealed that up to 34 countries have expressed their willingness to join BRICS in different forms.
