The New York Times reported that US law enforcement witnessed one of its “deadliest” days when three members of a special task force were killed and four local police officers were injured in a shootout in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Charlotte Police Department Director Johnny Jennings said that around 1:30 p.m. on April 29, members of the task force responded to a home on Galway Drive to serve a warrant for a person wanted for possession of a weapon. When law enforcement approached the subject, the person opened fire on them. Police returned fire and the suspect was pronounced dead in the front yard.
There were two other people in the house. At least one of them opened fire on law enforcement officers, Jennings said, and both were taken into custody. Police did not release the identities of the suspect or the officers.
This is one of the deadliest attacks on law enforcement in recent years. In July 2016, five police officers were killed in Texas when Micah Johnson, 25, opened fire in downtown Dallas during a protest against police shootings.
