(Dan Tri) - The US Department of the Interior said that the country has officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Denali peak in Alaska to Mount McKinley.

"Under the direction of President Donald Trump, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be called the Gulf of America and the highest peak in North America will once again be called Mount McKinley," the US Department of the Interior announced on January 24.
Mr. Trump signed an executive order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America just hours after being sworn in on January 20, fulfilling a campaign promise.
Although Mr. Trump has the authority to direct the U.S. Geological Survey to change the designation of the Gulf of Mexico, such a name change is unlikely to be internationally recognized.
Like the United States, Mexico has a long coastline surrounding the Gulf of Mexico. Mexican officials say the name Gulf of Mexico has been internationally recognized and used as a maritime reference for hundreds of years.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum joked earlier this month, suggesting renaming North America, including the United States, to "Mexican Americas," the historical designation used on early maps of the region.
Meanwhile, Alaska's Denali peak was formerly known as Mount McKinley in honor of former US President William McKinley. The mountain was renamed Denali (meaning high in the Koyukon native language) in 1975 at the request of the state.
In his inaugural address, Mr Trump said Mr McKinley, a Republican from 1897 to 1901, “made America very rich through tariffs and ingenuity, he was a natural businessman”.
