The US officially enters the power transition process, rumors say Trump's team wants to do this with North Korea

The White House has signed a memorandum of understanding with US President-elect Donald Trump's transition team, officially allowing Mr. Trump to begin the transition process with the current administration of President Joe Biden.

“This engagement allows our cabinet nominees to begin critical preparations, including deploying advance teams to all departments and agencies, and completing an orderly transition of power,” Susie Wiles, the nominee to become White House chief of staff, said in a statement on November 26.

According to the US National Public Radio NPR , the above move will allow Mr. Trump's team to work directly with federal agencies and access documents of departments, including non-public documents.

The handover comes after weeks of delays since the November 5 US presidential election. The unusual delay in signing the power transfer agreement has raised concerns about potential problems in the new government 's operations or the risk of conflicts of interest.

President-elect Donald Trump’s team previously rejected the Biden administration’s request to quickly sign the memorandum of understanding, and objected to some of the terms of the transfer of power agreement. Trump is expected to take office on January 20, 2025.

Meanwhile, on November 27, Yonhap news agency reported that Mr. Trump's team is considering "pursuing direct negotiations" with North Korean President Kim Jong Un in hopes of minimizing the risk of armed conflict.

According to Yonhap , some members of the US President-elect's team believe that his direct approach is most likely to break the ice in relations with the North Korean leader, however, Mr. Trump has not yet made a final decision on this issue.

During his second presidential campaign, Mr. Trump alluded to a policy of pursuing a direct relationship with the North Korean leader and mentioned the personal relationship between the two.

Still, some have expressed skepticism about the prospects of a resumption of a summit between Mr Trump and Mr Kim, citing Pyongyang’s rapidly expanding nuclear and missile programmes, North Korea’s close ties with Russia and more pressing security concerns for the US – such as the conflict in Ukraine.
