According to Reuters on the evening of July 30 (US time), US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick confirmed that the US had reached trade agreements with Cambodia and Thailand, just two days before the August 1 deadline when US President Donald Trump plans to impose new tariffs on countries that do not reach bilateral agreements.

The deal comes just days after the two Southeast Asian nations agreed to a ceasefire following an international proposal, including by Mr Trump.

The information was given by Mr. Lutnick in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity.

While not releasing specific details of the agreements, Mr. Lutnick emphasized President Trump's proactive role in the negotiation process.

"He uses trade as a tool. I listened all day Saturday (July 26 - PV) when Mr. Trump directly called Cambodia and Thailand. On Monday (July 28 - PV), the two sides announced a ceasefire and today we reached an agreement," Mr. Lutnick said.

Previously, according to the Bangkok Post , Mr. Trump used the trade talks as leverage to force the two countries to the negotiating table, warning that Washington would not sign a trade deal with either side if the conflict continued.

After the peace deal was signed, Mr. Trump called the leaders of the two countries and directed the trade negotiation team to resume talks.

Details of the agreements with Cambodia and Thailand are not yet available.

On the same day, the US also announced that it had reached an agreement with South Korea, imposing a 15% tax on imports from this country.

In addition, Mr. Trump said he would impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting August 1, while threatening further sanctions because the country buys energy from Russia.

According to Politico , President Trump is expected to sign new executive orders on July 31 (US time), imposing higher tariffs on many countries that have not reached trade agreements with the US.
