According to New Atlas, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has just set a new record in wireless power transmission technology when it successfully transmitted 800W of power via laser over a distance of 8.6km in 30 seconds in New Mexico. Previously, this system could only transmit 230W over 1.7km in 25 seconds.

This is a major step forward for the POWER (Continuous Optical Wireless Power Transmission) program, which aims for a future without wires, instead using laser beams to transmit energy through the air.

The system uses a receiver called PRAD (Power Receiver Array Demo) - a spherical structure that receives incoming laser beams, reflects them through a parabolic mirror, and then shines them onto dozens of photoelectric cells to convert the laser beams into electricity.

While the current efficiency is only 20%, DARPA says that this is acceptable for the power and range development phase, and will improve as the project scales. The project is currently in Phase 1 of a total of 3 phases. The ultimate goal is to transmit 10kW of power over 200km using equipment mounted on an aircraft or drone.

This laser wireless transmission technology is expected to open up a new future, solving the difficulties of power transmission, especially in military and humanitarian relief - where it is impossible to pull power lines due to difficult terrain.
