According to a trilateral statement released by the US Indo- Pacific Command, the three-day "Freedom Edge" exercise was conducted in waters south of Jeju Island (South Korea), according to Kyodo News.
The Freedom Edge exercise involves multiple warships and aircraft from three countries, including the US Navy's USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier, South Korea's ROKS Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong destroyer, and Japan's JS Ise helicopter destroyer.

"The Freedom Edge exercise demonstrates the will of South Korea, the United States and Japan to promote trilateral interoperability and protect freedom for peace and stability in the Indo- Pacific , including the Korean Peninsula," said a statement from the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
The exercise will focus on ballistic missile defense, air defense, anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, maritime interdiction, and cyber defense training. Freedom Edge marks the first time the U.S., Japan, and South Korea have conducted a multi-disciplinary trilateral exercise.

At the summit in August 2023 at Camp David (USA), US President Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio agreed to organize annual trilateral multi-disciplinary exercises.
In another development, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Ken Saito and South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Duk-geun announced on June 26 that they will cooperate on strategic issues including artificial intelligence (AI) safety, export controls, clean energy supply chains and semiconductors.

According to Reuters, Ms. Raimondo said at the meeting that the US, Japan and South Korea need to strengthen cooperation together for the benefit not only of themselves but also for the safety and security of the world. On the Korean side, Mr. Ahn said: "We hope that the meeting of the Korean, US and Japanese industry ministers will serve as an institutional basis to strengthen industrial cooperation among the three countries and jointly respond to global risks."
On the Japanese side, Mr. Saito said the three countries agreed to realize a strong and reliable supply chain by expanding cooperation with like-minded countries and designing a market where factors are fairly evaluated.
