NDO - California state health officials (USA) yesterday announced that they had discovered avian influenza virus in fresh retail milk produced by a local dairy farm.
The Santa Clara County Department of Public Health, which has been testing raw milk from local retailers, said in a press release that the county's public health laboratory detected the H5 virus in samples of raw milk produced by Raw Farm LLC on Nov. 21.
Santa Clara County immediately notified the California Department of Public Health and the company voluntarily recalled the raw milk.
California officials have advised people to avoid consuming the batch of whole milk that was identified as containing the virus to protect their health. The agency said it has not found any cases of illness related to the batch of raw milk.
On November 24, the California Department of Public Health advised people to avoid consuming a batch of whole milk produced and packaged by Raw Farm LLC in Fresno County.
"There have been no reports of illness associated with this batch of raw milk," the agency said.
Public health officials urged customers to “immediately return any product they purchased to the point of sale” and also notified retailers to remove affected raw milk from shelves.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said H5 avian influenza is widespread in wild birds worldwide and is causing outbreaks in poultry and dairy cattle in the US, with some recent human cases among poultry and dairy workers in the US.
The agency confirmed a human case of H5N1 avian influenza in a child in California late last week, the first reported case of avian influenza in a child in the United States.
According to data released by the CDC, there have been 55 human cases of H5 avian influenza reported in the United States in 2024, including 29 in California. The CDC assesses the risk to the general public as low.
