The US military has attacked weapons depots of the Houthi Islamist movement in Yemen, while Israel has carried out multiple operations that have escalated tensions.

According to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, forces under the US Central Command (Centcom) conducted multiple airstrikes on weapons storage facilities controlled by Houthi forces in Yemen on October 16.
"US forces have targeted multiple Houthi underground facilities that house weapons used to attack civilian and military vessels in the region," Austin said.
The attack came shortly after the US military conducted 15 airstrikes against targets linked to the Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen.
Since November 2023, the armed group has carried out nearly 100 attacks on ships passing through the Red Sea, and has declared its support for Palestine in the year-long conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis sank two ships, seized another and killed at least four sailors.
In addition, on October 17, an Israeli airstrike caused a fire in the coastal city of Latakia (Syria). Syrian air defense forces intercepted many aerial targets and extinguished fires at the city's entrance.
Latakia is the hometown of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is allied with Hezbollah forces in Lebanon.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights , the airstrike targeted an arms depot in the city.
On the same day, Israeli officials pledged to quickly improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip after Washington warned to stop supplying weapons.
Earlier, on October 15, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin sent a letter to Israeli officials, threatening to impose an arms embargo if the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was not resolved within a month.
Israel has been repeatedly accused of obstructing humanitarian aid to Gaza, but Tel Aviv denies this and says it has delivered more than 900,000 tons of aid to the region in less than a year.
