On December 9, US President Joe Biden's Advisor and Senior Director for the Western Hemisphere at the White House National Security Council Juan Gonzalez revealed that the US delegation expressed its support for Argentine President-elect Javier Milei in the negotiation process with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the development of the South American country's lithium sector during a meeting in Buenos Aires.
Mr Gonzalez confirmed that the talks were “very positive” and focused on Argentina’s struggling economy .
“I think the economic challenges Argentina is facing are priority number one,” a White House official told Reuters in Buenos Aires.
In addition, Mr. Gonzalez commented, Argentina also needs to reach an agreement on its economic plan with the IMF.
In addition, the White House official also said that the US delegation discussed with Mr. Milei on the topic of lithium, declaring that Washington is ready to support Argentina - the world's fourth largest lithium producer - to further expand production of this metal.
Referring to a potential deal to facilitate Argentina’s purchase of used F-16 aircraft from the United States, Gonzalez admitted that Washington and Buenos Aires were “discussing” the potential deal, but did not provide further details.
