US moves closer to banning TikTok

Reuters reported that on December 6 (local time), three judges at the federal appeals court for the District of Columbia ruled to reject TikTok's previous appeal to block a law that could ban the app in the US.

President Joe Biden signed the Protecting Americans from Foreign-Controlled Apps Act (PAFACA) into law in April, giving TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance until January 19 to sell or divest TikTok's US assets or face a ban.

The latest decision by a federal appeals court is a major victory for the US Justice Department and TikTok’s opponents, dealing a blow to ByteDance and moving closer to an unprecedented ban on a social media app used by 170 million Americans.

“While today’s news is disappointing, we will continue to fight to protect freedom of expression on our platform,” TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew told Reuters .

TikTok plans to appeal the decision to the US Supreme Court.
