Thanks to the right crop conversion, Mr. Cao Hoang Man earns more than 300 million VND/year.
In 2016, Mr. Cao Hoang Man in Hamlet 3, Thoi Hung Commune, converted 2 hectares of rice fields into gardens to grow Ido longan. Thanks to the correct conversion of crop structure, Mr. Man's longan growing model now provides a fairly stable income. Mr. Man said: "Ido longan trees bear fruit after 3 years of planting. From the second crop onwards, the tree yields even higher yields."
To grow Ido longan effectively, growers must master the planting and care techniques so that the longan produces fruit as desired, avoiding the situation of "good harvest, low price" and unfavorable factors due to the weather. Mr. Man shared: "The stage when longan sprouts is very susceptible to disease and insect attacks, so pesticides must be sprayed. At the same time, fertilizer must be applied periodically so that the tree can grow well and resist pests and diseases." Thanks to this method, Mr. Man's longan garden has grown well and has a stable income. In 2024, with 2 hectares of longan, Mr. Man harvested 30 tons of fruit, earning a profit of over 300 million VND.
In 2019, Mr. Tran Tan Dat in Hamlet 2, Thoi Hung Commune, boldly converted 15 hectares of ineffective rice fields into gardens. After 4 years of implementation, his model of intercropping soursop with durian has brought in a stable income. Mr. Dat excitedly said: "Recently, I harvested 10 tons of soursop, selling for 15,000-20,000 VND/kg. In recent years, soursop has been sold at a high price and the output has been very stable."
According to Mr. Dat, soursop can produce fruit twice a year. Mr. Dat shared: “The characteristic of soursop is cross-pollination. If we actively pollinate the flowers, the fruit set rate is quite high and the fruit is large. I also apply the fruit wrapping technique so the soursop looks beautiful”. To increase income from soursop trees, in recent years, Mr. Dat has researched and learned how to make soursop tea to sell to the market. Mr. Dat said: “Taking advantage of soursop fruits that do not meet the standards for sale, I harvest them to make soursop tea. I choose old fruits, peel them, slice them thinly, slice them, then dry them, then roast them until golden brown and they can be used. Soursop tea has a cockroach-wing color, a characteristic aroma, is well received by the market, and is priced at 300,000 VND/kg".
With the motto of short-term support for long-term, Mr. Dat also intercropped more than 100 Ri6 and Monthong durian trees. According to Mr. Dat, soursop trees bear fruit after 3 years of planting, while durian trees bear fruit after 4 years of planting. Intercropping like this will shorten the care time. When the soursop trees are no longer effective, they are cut down to let the durian trees grow. With this method, Mr. Dat has earned an income of over 300 million VND/year. Besides gardening, over the past 10 years, Mr. Dat has also purchased and distributed lotus shoots, earning a significant additional income. Mr. Dat said: "Depending on the time, I buy from 500kg to 1 ton of lotus shoots a day. After collecting, I resell them at lotus shoot purchasing points in Dong Thap province."
Mr. Pham Hoang Thoai, Deputy Secretary of Thoi Hung Commune Youth Union, said: “The Commune Youth Union always cares about, accompanies, and supports many young people to start businesses. In the near future, the Commune Youth Union will coordinate with relevant agencies to open training courses on fruit tree planting and care techniques for young people; at the same time, promote products and brands to help young people produce and do business effectively, increasing income.”
