NASA pushes forward plan to bring stranded astronauts back to Earth

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and SpaceX said they are urgently adjusting the schedule for launching rotational missions to the International Space Station (ISS) and bringing two astronauts who have been stuck there for a long time back to Earth.

According to an announcement from NASA on February 11, the Crew-10 launch is currently scheduled for March 12, but the final date still depends on the crew's preparations, as well as the agency's flight readiness certification process.

Crew-9, including NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian space agency Roscosmos’ Aleksandr Gorbunov, is expected to return to Earth after a few days of handover with Crew-10. The flight will also bring back astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been stuck on the ISS since June last year when Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft experienced technical problems.

The Crew-10 mission will carry astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers of NASA, Takuya Onishi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Kirill Peskov of Roscosmos.

Crew-10 was originally scheduled to launch in late March, but mission management decided to change plans and use a previously flown Dragon spacecraft, called Endurance, instead of a new one. Teams are completing a review of the spacecraft’s previously flown hardware to ensure it meets the agency’s Commercial Crew Program safety and certification requirements.
