Russia is developing an mRNA vaccine to fight cancer, which will be distributed free of charge to patients, Andrey Kaprin, director general of the Russian Health Ministry 's Research Center for Medical Radiology, said on Tuesday.

The vaccine was developed in collaboration with several research centers. Russia is expected to announce the vaccine in early 2025.

Earlier, Director of the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, Alexander Gintsburg, said preclinical trials showed that the vaccine was capable of preventing tumor growth and potential metastasis.

"During preclinical trials, we saw that the malignant tumor disappeared, and not only the tumor, but also the metastases disappeared. I do not rule out the possibility that we will enroll more patients in the fourth phase of trials," Gintsburg told Russian media.

Gintsburg noted that the vaccine is a therapeutic vaccine, which will be given to people who have been diagnosed with cancer. The vaccine is based on mRNA technology, which is already being used by drugmakers Pfizer and Moderna to produce COVID-19 vaccines. Gintsburg said the new vaccine could be used for any type of cancer.

Plans are underway to begin testing the vaccine’s efficacy against different types of cancer, including lung, kidney and pancreatic cancer, with cancer institutes expected to participate in the trials, Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology said.
