On September 4, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev announced that if long-range weapons were transferred to Ukraine, Moscow would be forced to take retaliatory measures, including establishing a buffer zone to the Polish border.

TASS news agency quoted Mr. Medvedev as saying that Russia cannot ignore the threat from long-range attack weapons such as cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, which are capable of attacking targets at great distances, deep inside Russian territory.

If these long-range weapons systems are supplied to Kiev, Moscow will take measures to increase security, and one of these measures will be to expand the zone of control, allowing the creation of a buffer zone.

According to him, the buffer zone on the border with Ukraine is important to protect Russia from Kiev's shelling and its width depends on the type of weapons the Eastern European country will receive.

The Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council made it clear: "If Ukraine wants to have long-range strike means... then this buffer zone must stretch all the way to Poland."

In June, at a meeting with war correspondents, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow could consider creating a buffer zone on Ukrainian territory if the bombing of Russian regions continued.

Meanwhile, on the same day, September 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that in order to use long-range weapons to attack military facilities deep inside Russian territory, Kiev needs to ask permission from four countries: the US, UK, France and Germany.

Affirming that the four countries are and can provide long-range weapons to Ukraine, the leader hopes that such attacks will cause Russian forces to "leave Ukrainian territory".

A day earlier, Reuters news agency quoted US officials as saying that Washington was about to approve the transfer of a batch of long-range cruise missiles that would allow Kiev to strike deep into Russian territory, a decision expected to be made this fall.
