On December 8, Syrian rebels took control of the capital Damascus and declared the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Meanwhile, there is still no confirmed information about the current location of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Mr. Assad has not spoken publicly since the rebel offensive.

Rebel forces, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), launched a surprise attack on government -held towns in the last week of November. By the evening of November 29, they had reached Aleppo for the first time since 2016. The current whereabouts of Mr. Assad, his wife Asma, and their two children are unknown.

As rebels have fought back hard in the past week, there has been speculation that Mr Assad could seek refuge in Moscow or Iran.

Syrian media reported on December 7 that Mr. Assad was still in Damascus. Meanwhile, Iranian media published a photo of President Assad on December 7, during a meeting with a senior Tehran official in Damascus.

According to data from Flightradar , a Syrian Air plane took off from Damascus airport when the capital was under rebel control. The plane initially flew towards the Syrian coast, but then suddenly turned around and flew in the opposite direction for several minutes before disappearing from radar. The identities of the passengers on the plane are still unknown.

The only flight that could be tracked departing Syria after midnight on Flightradar24 was the one that left Homs for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), hours after rebels captured the city.

On December 8, Syrian Prime Minister al-Jalali affirmed that he is ready to support the power transition process and cooperate with the opposition.

In a related development, the Syrian Foreign Ministry has just issued a statement pledging to represent all its people as the country enters a new chapter.

According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, the new era will be built on the foundation of “justice and equality, where all citizens enjoy their full rights and fulfill their obligations.” In addition, Syrian missions abroad remain committed to serving all citizens.
