The letters were sent to mark the 78th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule from 1910-1945.

In a letter to the Russian President, Mr. Kim Jong Un affirmed that the friendly relations between the two countries were nurtured during World War II in the fight against Japanese imperialism and in the fight against "imperialism and hegemony".

Besides, the North Korean leader also emphasized: "I firmly believe that the friendship and solidarity between the two countries will be further developed into a long-term strategic relationship in line with the requirements of the new era... The two sides will always strongly support and cooperate with each other in the process of moving towards common goals."

For his part, in a letter to Chairman Kim Jong Un, Mr. Putin stated: “I assure you that we will strengthen bilateral cooperation in all areas, for the benefit of our two peoples and for the solid stability and security of the Korean peninsula and the entire Northeast Asia region.”

Late last month, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, invited to attend the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice Agreement that ended the 1950-1953 Korean War, joined leader Kim Jong Un to inspect North Korea's latest nuclear-capable missiles and attack drones at a military parade in Pyongyang.
