Russia claims to have destroyed Ukraine's air force arsenal

VnExpressVnExpress03/10/2023

Russia announced a raid on a Ukrainian weapons and fuel depot at Dolgintsevo airport, along with a series of targets in Zaporizhzhia and Lugansk provinces.

"Russian units destroyed fuel storage facilities and aviation weapons depots at the Dolgintsevo airport in Dnipro province. The Enklav jamming station in Zaporizhzhia province and the communications center of the 66th Mechanized Brigade in Lugansk province were also hit," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on October 2.

Video appeared on social media the same day showing the moment a Russian missile crashed into a suspected Ukrainian military base in the city of Druzhkovka in Donetsk province.

Ukrainian officials have not commented on the information.

Dolgintsevo Airport is located near the city of Kryvyi Rih in Dnipro Oblast, central Ukraine. This is one of the bases of the Ukrainian MiG-29 squadron, once considered a safe zone because it is more than 70 km from the front line and out of range of many Russian weapons.

However, that began to change when the Russian Defense Ministry announced on September 11 that it had attacked the airport, destroying two MiG-29 fighters and three Su-25 attack aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force. Video posted on social media later showed the Lancet suicide drone crashing and destroying at least one MiG-29 in the parking lot.

The second attack took place on September 26, when Russian forces used guided rocket artillery or weapons launched from armed UAVs to attack, causing a MiG-29 fighter to burst into flames.

Russia is continuing its offensive across Ukraine, aiming to disrupt the supply network for the four-month-old counteroffensive that Kiev has been waging. Many of the strikes have targeted Ukrainian weapons and ammunition depots, oil storage facilities and industrial plants.
