Artist Hung Hoa Lu: From the vastness of the forest to the vastness of the sea

(GLO)- A few months ago, artist Tran Van Hung (stage name Hung Hoa Lu, in Pleiku ward) started working on a series of paintings with the theme "Forest and sea, one house" as a way to express his hope for connection and harmony in terms of geographical space and culture of Gia Lai province today.

These days, from the house to the small yard of artist Hung Hoa Lu’s family is like a “construction site” littered with picture frames and paints, showing the passion of the artist for his new art project. Every 3-4 am, he wakes up, immersing himself in the space of colors.

From a photographer who has won many national and international awards, now turning to the brush, artist Hung Hoa Lu's paintings have a strong realistic style. Each stroke brings out the vivid, authentic look of life that would be difficult to express if one did not observe carefully. When we visited, he was taking care of a painting of the working scene at Quy Nhon fish market, with the warm, close-knit life that he loves, expressed in each stroke full of artistic inspiration.

“I have traveled all over the country and the North, so I have a wealth of information about life in different regions. Therefore, I did not encounter any difficulties when switching from the theme of forests to the theme of the sea,” artist Hung Hoa Lu shared.

Currently, he has completed 5 paintings deeply inspired by the beauty of the sea using many materials such as oil, acrylic, and mixed; the size of the paintings ranges from 60 x 80 cm to 100 x 150 cm. From here, simple but characteristic images such as sea hibiscus flowers, fish markets... or rich in cultural identity such as majestic Champa temples... have harmonized freely with the clouds, people and the endless highland nature. Not relying entirely on existing life experiences, some of Hung Hoa Lu's paintings are boldly expressed with "unrealistic" lines to express the connection between the forest and the sea, which can be seen in the painting Waves with dugout canoes playing with the waves.

Artist Hung Hoa Lu said: Dugout canoes are a means of transportation in the Central Highlands river region. I release them into the sea with joy surging with white waves. “Quy Nhon sea, perhaps…” - He smiled subtly, if you see Quy Nhon, it is Quy Nhon waves.

Artist Hung Hoa Lu's creativity is admirable because he is dedicated to finding new things at the age of 70. Previously, in May 2025, he launched his first solo painting exhibition with the theme "Mountain Eyes" with 56 works. The exhibition is a praise for the vast nature and the simple, sincere people of the Central Highlands... Some works from this exhibition were selected to contribute to the painting series "Forest and Sea One House", as a counterweight to the theme of the sea.

According to Meritorious Artist Dang Cong Hung, Vice President in charge of Gia Lai Literature and Arts Association, from photography to painting, artist Hung Hoa Lu is gradually asserting himself through initial success. With the spirit of tireless artistic work to create the painting series "Forest and sea in one house", it expressed the artist's feelings towards the important issue of the country, which is "rearranging the country".

“We really appreciate the dedication and seriousness in the creativity of artist Hung Hoa Lu despite his old age. With the sublimation of artistic emotions, he has contributed to connecting and creating harmony between two regions and two cultural areas to accompany and understand each other on the journey to progress and develop,” emphasized Meritorious Artist Dang Cong Hung.

Artist Hung Hoa Lu said that many works are still being completed, also in the spirit of describing the important "handshake". That is the image of the Central Highlands folk wooden sculpture garden by the sea; gongs "escaping" the communal house and festival space to perform on the white sand. That is also the scene of making a living on a basket boat; the scene of a school of dolphins diving peacefully... "I hope to mobilize social resources to be able to soon organize an exhibition right in Quy Nhon ward in early 2026. Like an echo from the vastness of the forest to the vastness of the sea!" - Artist Hung Hoa Lu hopes.
