AFF Cup star injured, Vietnam team urgently calls up player who won 3 cups in 2 years

According to an announcement from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), Nguyen Dinh Trieu was injured during a recent training session. The best goalkeeper of the 2024 AFF Cup was sent for an X-ray to diagnose the injury.

To ensure the team's training, coach Kim Sang-sik called up goalkeeper Trinh Xuan Hoang ( Thanh Hoa ). He will immediately join the team tomorrow, March 14.

Trinh Xuan Hoang was born in 2000 and grew up in Thanh Hoa youth training center. In the last 2 seasons, he has been a regular starter and made a great contribution to the 2023/24 National Cup championship of the Thanh team. In the final match of the 2023-2024 season, he successfully blocked Joel Tagueu's penalty kick to help Thanh Hoa beat Hanoi and win the tournament for the second consecutive time.

However, Xuan Hoang's performance this season has been inconsistent. He made a few mistakes, mainly when handling the ball with his feet, and was given a break by his home team to regain his composure.

The Vietnamese team will play a friendly match against Cambodia on March 19. Six days later, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will play an official match against Laos in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Vietnam will face Malaysia, Nepal and Laos in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers (which will take place according to FIFA's international competition schedule from March 2025 to March 2026). Being in the top seed group and not having to face teams in the world's top 100, Vietnam will also avoid some strong teams in the remaining groups. All three opponents in the group are outside the world's top 130.

The 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers have 24 participating teams. These are the teams that did not pass the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia. The teams compete in a round-robin format (home and away) to calculate ranking points. Only the top teams will qualify for the Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia.
