Having had unusually large breasts for many years without going to the doctor, recently a 52-year-old man (in Hanoi ) felt uncomfortable, which affected his psychology so much that he decided to see a doctor.
At the hospital, through ultrasound, the doctor noticed the development of mammary gland tissue, diagnosing gynecomastia. The doctor also ordered hormone tests to assess the disorder.

According to Dr. Nguyen Minh Nghia - Head of the Department of Cosmetic Surgery, Hoe Nhai General Hospital (Hanoi), gynecomastia is an increase in the amount of breast tissue in men, caused by an imbalance between the two hormones estrogen and testosterone. This condition can occur on one or both sides, sometimes unevenly.

According to Dr. Nghia, some drugs can cause gynecomastia such as: Anabolic steroid use is common in some athletes. Some herbs have been shown to be related to this disease such as lavender oil and tea tree oil containing estrogen-like and weak anti-androgen elements, Tribulus terrestris containing medicinal substances used to replace anabolic androgens or Dong-quai or Angelica varsinensis which treats gynecological disorders and contains phyto-estrogens...
Gynecomastia is usually benign and can occur on one or both sides, sometimes unevenly. In most cases during puberty, enlarged breast tissue can disappear without treatment within 6 months to 2 years. However, abnormally large breasts cause psychological self-consciousness and body image in men.
Treatments for this condition include hormonal medications, testosterone replacement therapy, and surgery. “Surgery is usually performed through an incision around the areola, which helps improve aesthetics, speeds up post-operative recovery, reduces pain, and allows patients to be discharged early,” said Dr. Nghia.
Experts also recommend that when there are unusual symptoms, patients should go to specialized medical facilities for timely examination, consultation and treatment.
