According to Romania's Permanent Electoral Authority, more than 18 million voters have registered to take part in the presidential election, which is scheduled to take place from 7am to 9pm local time (05am to 19pm GMT) at nearly 19,000 polling stations across the country.

Overseas voting began on November 22 with a record 950 polling stations.

Opinion polls show leftist Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, leader of the Social Democrats - Romania's largest party - will enter the second round along with far-right politician George Simion of the Romanian Unity Alliance.

The second round of elections is expected to take place on December 8, while the National Assembly election will take place on December 1.

According to the Romanian Constitution, if no candidate wins a majority of votes, a runoff election will be held between the top two candidates after two weeks. The winner will be the candidate who receives the most valid votes.

The President of Romania serves a five-year term, with a maximum of two consecutive terms. The President is the leader of the armed forces and chairs the Supreme Defense Council, which decides on military aid. The President has the power to appoint the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, the Prosecutor General, and the head of the Secret Service.

In addition, Bucharest residents also participated in referendums on local governance issues and public health initiatives, including funding for drug prevention programs in schools.
