Richard Barnett, who famously put his feet up on the desk of the US House Speaker during the Capitol riots, has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison.
"All who followed Richard Barnett need to know that the actions that occurred on January 6, 2021, had serious consequences," Judge Christopher Cooper said on May 24 when he sentenced Richard Barnett, 63, of Arkansas, to 4.5 years in prison.
Judge Cooper said Barnett, who put his feet up on then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's desk during the Capitol riots, appeared to relish the notoriety.
Barnett was charged in January with eight counts, including obstructing Congress from certifying the election results, unlawful entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol Hill. Prosecutors had previously asked Judge Cooper to sentence him to seven years in prison.

Prosecutors said Barnett was unrepentant and tried to profit from his own notoriety by signing and selling photos of himself with his feet up on Pelosi's desk.
In the Capitol Hill riots, thousands of supporters of former US President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building, attacked police, and interrupted the electoral vote counting process to confirm Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election. This was the most serious attack on the US Capitol building in more than two centuries, leaving five people dead, including a police officer and four protesters.
US authorities have arrested more than 1,000 people in connection with the riot, most of whom face charges of unlawful entry or damage to property on Capitol Hill. About 350 people have been charged with assaulting law enforcement officers and more than 50 with conspiracy to commit a crime.
