Americans turn to 'Little Red Book' as TikTok is about to be banned

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên14/01/2025

American content creators have turned to Chinese social media app RedNote as an alternative to the soon-to-be-banned TikTok.

According to AFP news agency on January 14, RedNote's downloads skyrocketed and topped the App Store's download list on January 13.

RedNote, known in Chinese as Xiao Hong Shu, is gaining popularity in the US as many TikTok creators have started posting about their experiences trying the app. Some have even shared videos welcoming creators and users who have “migrated” from TikTok to RedNote.

Despite the last-ditch effort to appeal, TikTok and its parent company ByteDance (China) have less than a week to decide whether to divest TikTok in the US or accept that the app will be banned, after the US Supreme Court still decided not to change the law passed by Congress .

RedNote is similar to TikTok in that users focus on creating short videos. The only problem is that the app is in Chinese, so it will take some work to switch to English for US users.

While RedNote is a newcomer in the US, the platform has been around since 2013 and has been popular in China for years, competing with ByteDance's Douyin social network.

RedNote isn’t the only TikTok alternative. Another ByteDance app, Lemon8, has seen a surge in downloads. However, Lemon8 is likely to share the same fate if the US Supreme Court backs the Biden administration’s stance.

The Flip video app, described as “where social media meets shopping,” has also been gaining traction on the App Store and Play Store. Developed by Los Angeles-based Humans, the app features short videos and an online store. It’s currently ranked 14th on Google’s store and 4th on Apple’s App Store. Humans was valued at more than $1 billion last year, according to Crunchbase .
