Japanese industry and academia are planning to establish a new joint venture in fiscal 2024 to commercialize next-generation high-speed quantum computers.

The company will be established by the Institute of Molecular Science (IMS) under the National Institute of Natural Sciences of Japan to develop a new device called a cold atom quantum computer or neutral atom quantum computer. The company plans to release a prototype in fiscal 2026 and aims to become the world's first company to provide a high-performance commercial device in fiscal 2030. The new company will be headquartered in Aichi Prefecture, where IMS is headquartered.

About 10 industry players, including Japanese tech giants Fujitsu, Hitachi and NEC, will support the new venture. The joint venture will leverage Japan’s technological prowess in hopes of boosting the country’s industrial competitiveness and economic security.
