According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms will start blooming in Tokyo, Kochi and some other areas on March 23. The increase in temperature over the weekend will promote the cherry blossoms to bloom earlier than last year, marking the beginning of the cherry blossom season that lasts about 10 days in this country.
According to a VNA reporter in Tokyo, during the weekend of March 22 and 23, temperatures in Tokyo and many other areas in Japan will be higher than normal, with some places as warm as mid-May. It is expected that on March 23, temperatures in some areas will be above 25 degrees Celsius, reaching levels similar to summer.
This warm weather will prompt cherry blossom buds to bloom earlier, officially kicking off the cherry blossom viewing season in Japan.
According to the latest forecast from the Japan Meteorological Agency, cherry blossoms will begin to bloom on March 23 in Tokyo, Kochi, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima.
The announcement of cherry blossoms is decided based on observations of “standard trees” (also known as “sample trees”) in each locality by the Japan Meteorological Agency. However, to officially announce the blooming date, certain criteria must be followed.
Specifically, the blooming date is determined when there are 5-6 flowers blooming on the “standard tree.” If the number of flowers does not reach this level, this announcement will be postponed.
Similarly, the date of full bloom is also subject to the criterion of when about 80% of the flowers on the tree have bloomed. Due to the effects of climate change, there are more and more cases of flowers not blooming at the same time, especially in Kagoshima, where the agency has to count fallen flowers in the total of 80% of the flowers that have bloomed.
Based on historical cherry blossom announcement data, the location with the earliest blossom announcements nationwide is Kochi. Kumamoto and Fukuoka are in second place, while Tokyo and Kagoshima are in third place.
Cherry blossoms do not always bloom in order from south to north, but can sometimes start blooming from the Kanto region, which includes the capital Tokyo.
Japan has more than 400 different varieties of cherry blossoms, but Somei Yoshino is chosen as the standard variety for observing the blooming time, in which the Somei Yoshino cherry blossom tree at Yasukuni Shrine is used by the Japan Meteorological Agency as the standard for observation to determine the blooming season in the capital Tokyo.
Somei Yoshino is a hybrid of Oshima Zakura and Edohigan, developed by gardeners in Somei village (now Komagome, Toshima, Tokyo) in the late Edo period and early Meiji period. Initially, this flower variety was called “Yoshino Zakura” before being fixed with the name “Somei Yoshino” as it is today./.
