A teenage SDF member shot his comrades with an automatic rifle and was arrested. NHK reported that at least three people were injured in the shooting, but their conditions were not immediately clear. Kyodo News reported that two were in critical condition.

Investigators said no civilians were injured in the incident.

Shootings are rare in Japan, where gun ownership is tightly controlled. Anyone who wants to own a gun must go through a rigorous screening process.

Last July, Shinzo Abe was assassinated while campaigning outside a train station in Nara City. The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, used a homemade gun to shoot Abe at close range.

In April, current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was also targeted in an attack in the city of Saikazaki. Suspect Ryuji Kimura threw an explosive device at the leader but it was neutralized by security forces. Mr Kishida was not injured and the suspect was arrested at the scene.
