On the afternoon of October 8 (Hanoi time), two scientists , John Joseph Hopfield - American and Geoffrey Everest Hinton - British-Canadian, were announced as the winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for their fundamental discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning using artificial neural networks.

Machine learning has long played an important role in research, including classifying and analyzing large volumes of data, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.

Scientist Joseph Hopfield at Princeton University, New Jersey, USA and computer scientist Everest Hinton at the University of Toronto used the tools of physics to find patterns in information, building methods that helped lay the foundation for today's powerful machine learning.

Machine learning based on artificial neural networks is revolutionizing science, engineering, and everyday life. Geoffrey Everest Hinton (77) is famous for his research on artificial neural networks, which has earned him the title of "Godfather of AI." Meanwhile, scientist Joseph Hopfield (91) is widely known for his research on connectionist artificial neural networks in 1982, which later became known as Hopfield networks.

This is the second prize to be announced in the 2024 Nobel season.

The next awards to be announced include the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (October 9) and the Nobel Prize in Literature (October 10).

The Nobel Peace Prize is the only award announced in Oslo (Norway) on October 11.

Meanwhile, the Nobel Prize in Economics will close the 2024 Nobel Week on October 14. The Nobel Prize award ceremony will be held on December 10 in Stockholm (Sweden) and Oslo (Norway).

Each award includes a medal, a personal certificate and a cash prize of 11 million kronor (more than 1 million USD).

According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 117 Nobel Prizes in Physics have been awarded since 1901. The youngest person to receive this prestigious award at the age of 25 was Australian scientist William Lawrence Bragg (Nobel 1915). The oldest person to be honored with this award at the age of 96 was American scientist Arthur Ashkin (Nobel 2018).
