Endoscopy to remove fish bone stuck in patient's stomach

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên10/01/2024

On January 10, Shing Mark University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital (Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai ) announced that it had just performed an emergency endoscopy on a patient with a fish bone stuck in his stomach.

The patient, Mr. MVN (68 years old, residing in Long Thanh District, Dong Nai), was admitted to the hospital in the early morning of January 8 with severe abdominal pain. The patient stated that after dinner on January 7, he felt a dull pain, and at night the pain increased to the point where he could not bear it, so he had to go to the hospital.

After performing tests and ultrasound, the doctor determined that the patient had a foreign object and ordered an endoscopy, which revealed a piece of fish bone (about 4 cm long) firmly embedded in the stomach at both ends. The doctors inserted a tool into the endoscope and safely removed the fish bone.

Doctor CKI Tang Ba Dung (who performed the endoscopy) advised people who have foreign objects stuck in their throats such as bones, toothpicks, etc. not to use their hands to pick out the bones or swallow large pieces of rice. Doing so will cause the throat to be scratched, infected, and will also cause the bones to go deeper or become embedded, making it more difficult to remove the foreign object.
