Meanwhile, the Hindustan Times reported that 20 people were killed and more than 30 injured in an explosion at Quetta railway station in Balochistan.

At the time of the explosion, a train was preparing to depart from the station for Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan.

Quetta police chief, senior officer Muhammad Baloch, said the blast occurred inside the station as the Peshawar-bound express train was about to depart.

"It appears to be a suicide bombing, but it is too early to say for sure," Mohammad Baloch said, adding that an investigation was underway to determine the nature of the blast.

Speaking to reporters, Quetta Police Chief added that "around 100 people" were present at the scene.

In a statement, Balochistan government spokesman Shahid Rind confirmed that police and security forces had reached the scene of the incident and were collecting evidence.

Shahid Rind also said the death toll from the attack was likely to rise as some of the injured passengers were listed in critical condition. A 'state of emergency' has been declared at local hospitals, providing medical aid to the victims.

Pakistan is grappling with a surge in militant attacks in its northwest and a separatist insurgency in the south.

Pakistan's largest and poorest province - resource-rich Balochistan - is home to separatist militants.

In the past, militants have targeted energy projects funded by foreign sources — most notably China — accusing outsiders of exploiting the area while excluding residents from the profits.

No organization or individual has yet admitted carrying out the bombing.
