Raising loach fish using water circulation technology

With the potential of water surface area in the reservoirs for irrigation of dragon fruit, some households in Ham Thuan Nam commune have gradually developed the farming of freshwater aquatic species. In particular, the model of raising loach fish of Mr. Tran The Dien's household is an example of efficiency, thanks to the application of technology in production.

After nearly 1 year of raising loach in the traditional way, by the end of 2024, Mr. Tran The Dien's household in Ham Thuan Nam commune only harvested at break-even point, not effectively. The reason was due to lack of techniques, often encountering problems with water quality, diseases and low farming efficiency. Until the local Agricultural Technical and Service Center (now under the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center) suggested that he support the implementation of the model "Application of water circulation technology in raising loach". With a curious and inquisitive nature, Mr. Dien agreed to follow the instructions of the technical staff.

Accordingly, unlike traditional farming in lakes, this time he switched to raising fish in tarpaulin-lined ponds. At the same time, he managed the water quality with a suitable circulating filtration system for the loach to grow quickly, limiting the rate of herd division. With a 1,000 m2 pond, Mr. Dien released 600 fry, after about 8 months to 1 year, the yield was about 1.2 tons of commercial loach, deducting expenses, earning a profit of over 90 million VND.

Mr. Dien added that during the first 2 months of release, the fish suffered losses due to unfamiliar water and environment. But in the 3rd month, they started to stabilize, changing the water once a month and feeding twice a day. The weight when harvested was about 5 fish/kg, with traders buying at a price of 160,000 - 200,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, the profit was about 80,000 VND/kg.

According to local agricultural officials, the loach is a fish with high economic value, delicious meat and is favored by the market and consumed well. However, the loach is not easy to raise because it is influenced by many factors such as water source, light and pH level... If you master the techniques and technology, raising loach is quite simple. The owner only needs to feed the fish twice a day, early morning and late afternoon, with specialized bran. The owner occasionally needs to turn on the oxygen pump to circulate the air so that the loach can grow well. In addition, the temperature in the pond must be from 26 - 28 degrees Celsius, put bamboo tubes or plastic tubes in the pond so that the fish gather into schools, because this fish likes to live in schools.

According to the agricultural sector, for households with small land areas, who are proactive and willing to learn new farming models, raising loach is a good and practical idea that brings high economic efficiency. At the same time, it is said that this is a freshwater aquaculture model that is considered successful. Similar to a number of other farming models in the area that are also bringing efficiency such as raising eels without mud using leftover food combined with raising catfish; eel seed production model, raising commercial frogs in tanks... Thereby, not only helping farmers access new freshwater aquatic species but also contributing to diversifying local aquaculture species, in line with the current popular trend of green agriculture and circular economy. The initial success of the loach farming model using water circulation technology opens up the next step in researching and developing farming models for other types of fish such as eel, goby, snakehead fish... applying water circulation filtration technology in the direction of saving water resources and sustainability.
