Stabilizing livelihoods through fish cage farming at An Khe-Ka Nak hydropower reservoir

(GLO)- In the middle of An Khe-Ka Nak hydroelectric reservoir (Cuu An commune, Gia Lai province), an aquaculture village is taking shape, creating a stable source of livelihood for the people. This model also contributes to transforming the local agricultural production structure towards sustainability.

Five years ago, after learning about the potential of cage fish farming on the An Khe-Ka Nak hydroelectric reservoir, Mr. Nguyen Van Long (Cuu An commune) boldly switched from growing short-term crops to raising freshwater fish.

Taking advantage of the large water surface, he gradually expanded the scale. Up to now, he has developed more than 10 fish cages, bringing a stable income, contributing to improving his family's life.

“After a period of implementing the model, I realized that raising fish is more profitable than growing short-term crops. In addition, the output is favorable and stable. Every year, I sell about 1 ton of fish,” Long shared.

With a water surface area of over 3.4 km², An Khe-Kanak Lake is considered an ideal ecological area for developing a cage fish farming model thanks to its advantages of clean water, less fluctuating flow rate and abundant natural food sources.

Up to now, Cuu An commune has 12 households participating in fish cage farming, with a total of 17 rafts and 245 cages, mainly raising tilapia and tilapia. These are fish breeds suitable for the hydrological conditions of the lake, giving high productivity and few diseases. Each year, fish output reaches about 800 tons.

As one of the households raising fish in cages for quite a long time, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Quyen (Cuu An commune) also said: The natural conditions in the An Khe-Ka Nak hydroelectric reservoir are very suitable for raising fish in cages. "The water here is very suitable for raising red tilapia, achieving productivity because it takes advantage of natural food sources. If the selling price is stable at around 50 thousand VND/kg, it will be profitable" - Mr. Quyen shared.

Despite the advantages of natural conditions, the fish cage farming model on An Khe-Ka Nak Lake is still fragmented and spontaneous. The quality of the fish fry is not guaranteed, and the low-value species make the economic efficiency not commensurate with the potential.

Faced with this situation, local authorities have oriented towards sustainable development, supported science and technology, encouraged expansion of acreage and experimented with raising fish breeds with high economic value.

Mr. Duong Phu Tho - Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Cuu An Commune - said: The Department will preside over and advise the Commune People's Committee to guide and support people in raising fish in cages with fish of higher value, such as crispy grass carp which is very popular in the market. In addition, in the near future, the Department will proactively advise the Commune People's Committee to apply science and technology to farming, introduce effective models to households, helping them have more references to change breeds as well as appropriate and effective farming methods.

The model of fish cage farming on the hydroelectric reservoir has brought stable livelihoods to many households in Cuu An commune. With the support and development orientation from the government, this model not only solves local employment, but also contributes to the formation of a high-value and sustainable aquaculture area.
