Billionaire Elon Musk said on February 22 that federal employees must explain what they did last week or resign.
“As directed by President Donald Trump, all federal employees will soon receive an email asking them to explain their actions over the past week. Failure to respond will be considered a resignation,” Elon Musk wrote on social network X on February 22.
Reuters reported that employees from US federal agencies received emails asking them to list five key points about their work, excluding classified information, by February 24. The emails did not mention that failure to respond would mean resignation, as Mr. Musk had claimed on X.
Mr. Elon Musk appeared at a conservative event in Washington DC, USA on February 20.
The move is part of an ongoing plan to streamline the federal government. CNN reported that thousands of federal employees have been laid off across various agencies and that the cuts are expected to affect many more.
Hours before Musk’s post, President Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social: “Elon (Musk) is doing a great job, but I would like to see him be more decisive. Remember, we must save our country but in the end we must make it greater than ever before.”
The White House has not yet responded to the email requesting an explanation. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the union representing federal workers, issued a statement on February 22 saying it would oppose any unlawful termination.
Meanwhile, members of the US Congress have accused recent internal decisions of the US administration that have limited employees from key government agencies from communicating with lawmakers, as well as preventing employees from providing information for an internal investigation into the Committee on Government Efficiency (DOGE), The Hill reported.
