(CLO) US President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday appointed CEO Devin Nunes of the social network Truth Social as Chairman of the President's Intelligence Advisory Council.

Mr. Nunes, a longtime supporter of President-elect Trump who led the House Intelligence Committee during part of his first White House term, will remain CEO of Truth Social, the social network owned by Mr. Trump, while on the advisory board.

Mr Nunes was known for criticising the FBI for taking action against Mr Trump during its investigation into alleged “Russian interference” in the 2016 US presidential election, when Mr Trump defeated Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social that the Democratic Party often makes baseless accusations to blame Russia for interference to help him gain many advantages in recent US elections.

“Devin will leverage his experience as former Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and his pivotal role in exposing the ‘Russia, Russia, Russia hoax’ to provide me with independent assessments of the effectiveness and appropriateness of the U.S. Intelligence Community’s activities,” he wrote.

The President's Intelligence Advisory Board is tasked with providing objective assessments of the effectiveness and planning of intelligence agencies.

In addition to Mr. Nunes, President-elect Trump also appointed Troy Edgar, an IBM CEO and former official of the US Department of Homeland Security, as deputy secretary of the Department, and businessman Bill White as US Ambassador to Belgium.
