US President Donald Trump on March 12 threatened to devastate the Russian economy if President Vladimir Putin rejected a 30-day ceasefire proposal with Ukraine.
Speaking in the Oval Office, US President Trump warned that the consequences if Russia ignored the ceasefire would be "very serious", but stressed that he did not believe that would happen. Mr Trump also suggested that Ukraine could be the more difficult side at the peace talks, according to The Telegraph .

Asked about pressuring his Russian counterpart to reach a deal, Mr Trump replied: "Yes. We could. But I hope it won't be necessary."
"There are things you can do that are not pleasant, financially. I could put economic pressure on Russia, which would be very bad for Russia, which would be devastating to Russia. But I don't want to do that because I want peace," Trump added.

Mr Trump's statement came after reports that Mr Putin was prepared to delay any deal that would slow the advance of Russian forces on the battlefield.
The proposal for a temporary ceasefire was made by Ukrainian and US officials during eight hours of talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on March 11. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on March 12 that US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff would travel to Moscow this weekend to present Washington’s proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
The Kremlin said on March 12 that it would review details from Washington on its proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine before responding. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv supported the Trump administration’s efforts to push for peace as soon as possible.
In another development, President Trump acknowledged that the hostile situation in Ukraine is essentially a war that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is waging against Russia. Trump made this statement during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin.
"Money poured in by the billions and billions and billions of dollars and NATO became much stronger. Now NATO spends a lot of money and conducts this terrible conflict. It's a pity that they have to do that," Trump said, according to TASS news agency.
