Justin Trudeau has decided to resign as Prime Minister of Canada and leader of the ruling Liberal Party, but said he will continue to lead the country until the Liberal Party chooses a new leader, AFP reported on January 7.
Following the above statement from Ottawa, US President-elect Donald Trump, who has never had a good relationship with Mr. Trudeau even during Mr. Trump's first term from 2017-2021, once again raised the proposal to make Canada the 51st state of the US.
The idea was mentioned by Mr. Trump during a meeting on November 29, 2024 with Mr. Trudeau at the Mar-a-Lago resort (Florida state) following his victory on election day November 5, 2024.
Mr. Trump also mentioned this "invitation" several times on social media. "Many people in Canada would love to become the 51st state of the United States. The United States would no longer have to endure the massive trade deficit and subsidies that Canada needs to maintain (its economy ). Justin Trudeau knows this, and is resigning," Mr. Trump wrote on the Truth Social account.
Mr Trump's proposal was ignored by Canada. However, when Mr Trump called Mr Trudeau the "governor" of the "great state of Canada", Canadian politicians responded.
The Hill newspaper quoted Canadian Green Party leader Elizabeth May as saying that President-elect Trump's "joke" about Canada becoming the 51st state of the US was "not funny at all".
In addition, Mr. Trump also warned that he would impose a 25% tax on imported goods from Canada if his neighbor did not find a way to control the border and adjust the trade balance that is tilted towards Canada.
