Trump 'misspoke', opponent Haley questioned about mental health

Ms. Haley referred to Mr. Trump's campaign speech in New Hampshire the day before, when he accused her of failing to prevent the violent attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, AFP reported.

"[Ms.] Nikki Haley is in charge of security. We've got her 10,000 troops, National Guard, whatever they want," Mr. Trump said, implying that his opponents had failed to control the violence.

Former US President Donald Trump campaigned in New Hampshire on January 17.

In response, Ms. Haley pointed out that not only was she not responsible for security at the Capitol, she had not even taken office at that time.

"They said he was confused... He was talking about Nancy Pelosi. He mentioned me several times in that situation," the former South Carolina governor added.

For anyone who is under the pressure of a presidency, the question is "whether they are mentally healthy enough to do it," she said.

However, if we ignore the confusion between Ms. Haley and Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Trump's argument that the House speaker is responsible for Capitol security is also "inaccurate," according to CNN.

The comments from Ms. Haley, 52, were among the most direct challenges yet from a fellow Republican to the mental health of Mr. Trump, 78.

In a statement late on January 20, Mr. Trump boasted about his cognitive abilities, saying that he "feels mentally stronger now than he did 25 years ago."

Regarding Ms. Haley's statement on January 20 that she would not be Mr. Trump's deputy, he responded that "she probably won't be chosen as vice president," according to Fox News.

Ms. Haley was appointed by Mr. Trump as the US Ambassador to the United Nations when he was in office. The former US President said he did not trust his former subordinate's ability to handle difficult negotiations with leaders of rival countries.

In addition, on January 19, Mr. Trump also attacked Ms. Haley through a post on the TruthSocial account. The former US President was accused of attacking his opponent's race and ethnicity by mocking Ms. Haley's birth name and repeatedly calling her "Nimbra".

Haley is the daughter of immigrants from India. She was born Nimarata Nikki Randhawa in South Carolina, but she often used her middle name "Nikki" instead of "Nimarata".

In response, Ms. Haley told Fox News that former President Trump called her by her nickname because "he felt insecure" about her emergence in the Republican primaries as his biggest rival.

Asked about her personal reaction to Trump's name-calling, Haley said it was not "personal" to her. She said she "didn't consider it a racial attack" but noted that Trump did it because he felt "threatened."
