"Where do you get prosecuted for interfering in a presidential election when you have every right to do so?", Mr. Trump said in an interview with Fox News Channel broadcast on September 1.

Former US President Donald Trump speaks at a rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania (USA) on August 30.

Trump made the statement after US Special Prosecutor Jack Smith on August 27 issued a revised federal indictment accusing Trump of illegally attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The new indictment retains four counts from the original indictment issued on August 1, 2023, but focuses on Trump's role as a political candidate for re-election, rather than as president.

Mr. Trump, the current Republican presidential candidate, has not made it clear whether he will unconditionally accept the results of the US presidential election on November 5, 2024 if he loses again, according to Reuters. His opponent will be the Democratic presidential candidate, US Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris calls Trump's cemetery visit a 'political stunt'

In a statement on September 2, Ms. Harris's campaign said that Mr. Trump's latest statement in an interview with Fox News and his previous statements "make it clear that he believes he is above the law."

"Now, Mr. Trump claims he has 'every right' to interfere in the 2020 election. He does not have that right," a spokesperson for Ms. Harris' campaign said in a statement.
