Trump takes advantage of Biden's pardon for his son?

US President-elect Donald Trump has quickly exploited US President Joe Biden's pardon of his son to hint at the possibility of releasing those detained in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

"Does Joe Biden's pardon of his son Hunter include the hostages of 'January 6' who have been held captive for years? This is an abuse and miscarriage of justice," US President-elect Trump commented on the social network Truth.

On December 1, current US President Joe Biden signed an order pardoning his son Hunter Biden before he faces charges related to illegal gun possession and tax evasion.

According to The Guardian, currently, the fact that incumbent President Joe Biden pardoned his son seems to be seen by Mr. Trump as a new legitimate reason to exploit.

What did Biden say when he pardoned his son?

The Truth post is Trump’s latest comment on behalf of those convicted of participating in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. The 2021 attack has spawned one of the largest criminal investigations in U.S. history, resulting in federal charges against nearly 1,500 people. About 1,000 have been convicted or pleaded guilty.

The investigation is ongoing. Last month, the FBI said it was seeking nine people in connection with violent attacks on police during the Capitol riots.

Trump has previously spoken publicly about his desire to act on behalf of those held in detention, whom he calls “hostages” and “ political prisoners.” In March, Trump said that one of his first actions upon taking office, if re-elected, would be to “free the January 6, 2021 hostages.”

Appearing at the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago (USA) in July, Mr. Trump also affirmed: "Oh, absolutely, I would. If they are innocent, I would pardon them" when asked by reporters about the amnesty for those detained in the event on January 6, 2021.

However, Mr. Trump did not commit to a comprehensive pardon. "I can't speak for every single person, because some of them, maybe they're out of control," CNN quoted Mr. Trump as saying.

Several people convicted and facing maximum sentences did not participate in the violence inside the Capitol but were convicted of conspiracy and other crimes related to organizing the attack, including Stewart Rhodes, founder of the extremist group Oath Keepers, and Enrique Tarrio, leader of the far-right group Proud Boys.

Whatever the intentions of US President-elect Trump and his campaign team, many of those currently incarcerated are certainly hopeful that they will be pardoned, according to The Guardian . Among those detained, at least one person has no doubt that freedom is imminent.
