On February 24, the South Carolina primary election officially took place and polls closed at 7 p.m. (7 a.m. on February 25, Vietnam time). The two remaining main candidates in the Republican race are former President Trump and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who also served as Governor of South Carolina.

According to CNN’s projections, Mr. Trump will win and take all 29 electoral votes chosen on a statewide scale. The remaining 21 electoral votes will be allocated based on the results of each congressional district, in which the winner in each of the state’s seven congressional districts will win 3 votes.

The candidate who reaches 1,215 electoral votes will win the Republican Party's nomination for the US presidential election in November. So far, Mr. Trump has 92 votes while Ms. Haley has only 17 votes after elections in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and the US Virgin Islands.

Ms. Haley did not immediately make a statement about the result, but before that, the former ambassador emphasized that she would continue the race even if she lost in South Carolina, at least until the "Super Tuesday" election (March 5), when Republican voters in 15 states and one territory go to the polls.

Speaking after his predicted victory, Mr Trump said the expected result in South Carolina was "an even bigger victory than we predicted".

The former president said he had "never seen the Republican Party more united than it is now." "There's never been a spirit like this," Mr. Trump told a cheering crowd on the evening of February 24 (US time).
