Trump supports granting green cards to US college graduates

In a conversation with technology investors in Silicon Valley, posted on the All-In podcast on June 20, Mr. Trump made a surprising statement regarding immigration policy.

Host Jason Calacanis asked whether the US needs a legal mechanism to retain talent, which is a challenge in the technology sector. Mr. Calacanis asked whether Mr. Trump could ensure that businesses can recruit the best people from around the world to work in the US.

"I promise. I agree with that, otherwise I wouldn't promise... You graduate from a university, I think you should automatically get a green card as part of your university degree so you can stay in the United States," Trump responded.

Former US President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally in Wisconsin on June 18.

A green card, or permanent resident card, is a document that allows a foreign individual to live and work permanently in the United States. It is unclear whether Mr. Trump was referring only to people with legal student visas, or to illegal immigrants or those who have overstayed their visas.

When asked for comment, Donald Trump's campaign said: "Only after going through the most rigorous vetting process in American history will the most talented graduates who can make great contributions to America be allowed to stay."

Trump’s comments may be confusing because the former US president has a hardline stance on immigration. During his tenure, the government took steps to restrict US companies from hiring foreign workers on H-1B visas.

When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, the Trump administration forced tens of thousands of foreign students to leave the US if their schools moved classes online. The decision was challenged and sued by many universities, so the government withdrew it.
