According to a VNA correspondent in Cairo, Egyptian and Spanish archaeologists on December 15 announced a new discovery of a collection of tombs dating back to the Ptolemaic period, during excavations at the El-Bahnasa site in Minya province, Upper Egypt.

Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, Dr. Mohammed Ismail Khaled, emphasized that this is the first time mummies have been found in the El-Bahnasa area dating back to the Ptolemaic period.

During the excavation, archaeologists from the University of Barcelona and the Egyptian Institute of the Ancient Near East also found some of the first texts and drawings depicting ancient Egyptians appearing in the El-Bahnasa area.

This discovery helps shed light on popular religious practices during the Ptolemaic period.

In one of the tombs, archaeologists found two heart-shaped scarab beetles inside the mummy, 29 amulets and many statues of gods such as Horus, Thoth and Isis.

According to Dr. Ester Ponce Milado, head of the Spanish archaeological team, they found a rectangular stone burial chamber leading to a Ptolemaic cemetery, with a main hall leading to three rooms containing dozens of mummies lined up side by side.

The walls of one of these rooms are decorated with colored drawings and inscriptions, revealing the tomb’s owner, named “One Ner,” and his family members with statues of the gods Anubis, Osiris, Atum, Horus. Inside this room, there are also four limestone coffins./.
