It's very simple, just by walking a few thousand steps a day, you can improve blood circulation, reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve the quality of life. Therefore, the question "how much walking is enough to live longer?" is always the top concern of many people.

There has been a lot of research looking at this issue, and most recently, a large-scale meta-analysis has provided a remarkable answer.

New research, just published in the medical journal The Lancet Public Health, has discovered the number of steps needed to walk each day to bring many health benefits, especially prolonging life.

The research team, led by Professor Melody Ding from the School of Public Health , University of Sydney (Australia), analyzed data from 88 studies from 2014 to 2025 conducted in more than 10 countries, including Australia, the US, the UK and Japan.

Researchers looked at the effects of different amounts of daily walking on health factors, particularly the risk of premature death.

Starting at 2,000 steps, they compared the results for each 1,000-step increase to look for differences in risk of premature death or serious illness.

The results found: When walking reached the level of about 5,000-7,000 steps per day, significant health improvements were noted, according to medical news site Medical Express .

The results included: Reductions in all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality, cancer incidence and mortality, diabetes incidence, dementia, depression, and falls risk.

Specifically, compared to 2,000 steps, walking 7,000 steps per day brings the following results:

  • Reduces the risk of premature death by up to 47%.
  • 47% reduction in risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
  • 37% reduction in risk of death from cancer.
  • Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 25%.
  • 38% reduced risk of dementia.
  • 14% reduction in risk of diabetes.
  • 28% reduction in risk of falls.
  • 22% reduced risk of depression.

However, above 7,000 steps, the additional benefits are negligible.

Based on these results, the researchers are working with the Australian government on future updates to physical activity guidelines.

Professor Ding said: Walking 7,000 steps is a realistic goal based on the research results. However, for those who cannot reach 7,000 steps a day, even increasing from 2,000 to 4,000 steps a day will significantly improve health.

So don't worry if you can't walk to that level yet, just get up and walk and your body will thank you!
