According to Mr. Mai Van Duong, around March 2025, the unit received a report from people participating in forest protection patrols in the forest area that there were signs of elephants giving birth in the Na Lau area. Immediately, the unit developed a plan and organized the placement of 30 camera traps at 15 locations where the elephants often moved.

The first results did not detect any new elephants, so the unit continued to set camera traps in other areas. On July 23, the force collected the camera traps. When checking the images, everyone was happy to discover the image of a baby elephant with its mother.

“After many months of setting camera traps in many locations, we have now discovered a baby elephant. Through information from local people, we also discovered another mother elephant showing signs of giving birth. We are currently continuing to set camera traps to record more. Recording the appearance of a baby elephant marks a positive sign of the natural reproduction process of the wild elephant herd living in the reserve,” said Mr. Mai Van Duong.

Since 2017, Quang Nam province (old) has invested hundreds of billions of VND, planning 19,000 hectares to establish an Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area. Of which, the strictly protected area covers an area of 13,000 hectares; in addition, the buffer zone of the conservation area is 25,000 hectares. This is the first dedicated elephant conservation area in Vietnam to be established. According to statistics, by 2023, the herd of elephants in the conservation area will consist of 8 individuals.
