It took 15 years for researchers to discover the existence of this new blood type.

A French woman of Guadeloupe origin has been confirmed to be the only case in the world carrying a completely new blood type, dubbed "Gwada negative".

The discovery, announced by the French National Blood Service (EFS), marks the 48th blood group system ever recorded globally.

The unusual antibodies were first detected in 2011 when the woman, then 54 and living in Paris, underwent pre-operative testing, according to EFS. However, due to technical and resource limitations, the research could not continue at that time.

It was not until 2019, thanks to high-speed gene sequencing technology, that scientists identified the genetic mutation that gives rise to this rare blood type.

“The patient is the only person in the world known to have this blood type, and is also the only person who is compatible with her own blood,” said Thierry Peyrard, a medical biologist at EFS. He said the woman inherited the gene variant from both her parents.

The French research team's discovery was officially recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) at a conference held in Milan in early June. Previously, ISBT only recognized 47 blood group systems, including common systems such as ABO and Rh.

The name "Gwada Negative" is based on the local nickname for the island of Guadeloupe, where the woman is originally from, and is considered by experts to be "easy to pronounce in many languages".

Scientists hope to find more people with similar blood types to improve medical care for patients with rare blood types. "The discovery of new blood types means that safer and more effective transfusion services can be provided to people who need special blood transfusions," the EFS said.
